VTNZ has been doing an additional check for our WoF customers for a while now, and we've found out that us Kiwis aren't too good at keeping our car safe (nor keeping our wallets full given a car in poor condition costs more to keep on the road).
Why is tyre pressure important?
Keeping the correct air pressure in your tyres is important for both safety and fuel efficiency.
When your air pressure is too low, you have poor fuel efficiency, it wears out your tyres, and you have poorer handling on the road – sometimes even loss of control, and potential vehicle overloading.
With the right amount of air pressure, your tyres wear longer, save fuel, and you can prevent accidents.
What about oil?
As a rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to check your oil every second or third time you fill up your car. It doesn’t take long and you can do it while your car is filling up (or you can ask someone else to do it for you).
From what we’re seeing, people aren’t checking it enough!
Our research shows two out of five of our customers surveyed had some issue with their oil raised with them - 29% had poor engine oil condition, 28% had low engine oil.
But anecdotally, it’s even more than that. Our testers here are seeing closer to one in two vehicles having some sort of issue with their oil – either low or dirty. Over time, this can ruin engines completely.
